Rebstock Awarded Beckman Fellowship<\/h1>\n

\"Jaclyn<\/p>\n

Baker lab alum Jaclyn Rebstock<\/strong>\u00a0has been named as a recipient of the Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellowship in Chemical Instrumentation. This prestigious fellowship supports advanced research by postdoctoral scholars in the development and build of chemical instrumentation.\u00a0 Jaclyn completed her PhD in 2025, and is now working with Munira Khalil at the University of Washington. Her awarded project is entitled \"Development of an Ultrafast 2D VSFG Spectrometer for Adsorbate-Covered Metal Surfaces to Advance CO\u2082 Conversion Technologies\". Congratulations, Jaclyn!<\/p>\n

Baker Group Paper Published on Cover of JACS!<\/h1>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Congratulations to Jaclyn Rebstock<\/strong>, Anshuman Samanta<\/strong>, and collaborators for their paper, \"Specifically Adsorbed Carbonate Ions and Copper Surface Reconstruction: The Effect of Double Layer Charging Revealed by Time-Resolved Sum Frequency Generation Spectroscopy<\/a>\", published as the cover article for Vol 147\/Issue 45 of the Journal of the American Chemical Society !\u00a0 In this study we find that carbon monoxide adsorption on copper is controlled by potential-dependent surface reconstruction between a metallic and malachite-like surface phase. This reconstruction, which determines the efficiency of carbon dioxide reduction, is controlled by the charging\/discharging kinetics of the electrochemical double layer. Thanks to Aishwarya Rao and Aravind Asthagiri for the insightful collaboration with theory.<\/span><\/p>\n

Students from Columbus City Schools visited the Baker Lab on May 13th as part of the annual Breakfast of Science Champions event. Hosted by the OSU Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, this event brings middle school students to campus to enjoy breakfast with CBC faculty and staff, tours and demonstrations with OSU scientists, and liquid nitrogen ice cream to conclude the visit. The Baker group enjoys participating in this event every year to share a taste of their research with future scientists!<\/p>\n

Neves-Garcia Recognized for his Dual-Degree Journey<\/h1>\n

\"MaleTomaz Neves-Garcia was recently featured in an article by the OSU Office of International Affairs<\/a>. Tomaz was recognized for completing a dual doctoral degree in chemistry as part of a dual-degree program between the University of S\u00e3o Paulo and The Ohio State University. The first student chosen to participate in this program, Tomaz earned his dual PhD in 2024. Tomaz is currently working as a postdoctoral researcher in the Baker lab studying CO2 capture methodologies. Congratulations Tomaz!<\/p>\n

Columbus area middle school students traveled to OSU for the annual Breakfast of Science Champions event. The students were able to experience what it was like to be a scientist in the chemistry department. They traveled to different stations around the department to see cool demos and do hands-on experiments! The Baker group showed the students examples of solubility, molecular interactions, and lasers. The students loved seeing science happen (and taking home some cool lava lamps)!<\/p>\n

NSF Establishes National EXtreme Ultrafast Science (NEXUS) Facility at Ohio State Led by Dr. Baker<\/span><\/h1>\n

The NSF Division of Chemistry through the Mid-scale Research Infrastructure-1 program awards $9.5M to a team at The Ohio State University led by Robert Baker to establish NSF NEXUS. \u00a0This facility will be a beyond-the-state-of-the-art national XUV light source to serve the scientific and engineering communities as an open-access user facility. This light source will be coupled to a versatile array of experimental capabilities, designed to facilitate transformative progress in areas of national priority with emphasis on energy conversion and quantum information science.<\/p>\n

At the heart of this facility is a new laser technology for producing extreme ultraviolet and soft x-ray photon energies at repetition rates of hundreds of kilohertz with average power exceeding one kilowatt. The combination of attosecond time resolution, high energies, and high repetition rates enables measurements that currently cannot be made with existing technology.<\/p>\n

Translating Engineering Research K-8 (TEK8) is an outreach program developed by the\u00a0Colleges of Engineering and Education and Human Ecology. The program communicates the broader impacts of federally funded engineering research while increasing urban middle school students\u2019 interest in engineering and preparing practicing teachers and engineering students\u00a0to introduce middle school students to the engineering design process. An end product of\u00a0TEK8 are\u00a0project-based lessons around engineering design challenges created by\u00a0engineering students and\u00a0teachers. The design challenges have been tested in an after-school setting\u00a0and expose students to the essence of engineering: design and problem solving. Mathew\u2019s challenge was to communicate to 3rd and 4th grade students how a catalyst works and how it can be controlled to mediate chemical reactions.<\/p>\n

Baker group participates in Breakfast of Science Champions at OSU<\/span><\/h1>\n

November 12, 2015<\/span><\/p>\n

On November 4th Columbus middle school students journeyed to OSU for Breakfast of Science Champions. For this event, middle school students got to experience what it was like to be a scientist in the chemistry department. The students traveled to four different stations around the chemistry department with different chemistry demos as well as some hands on activities. The Baker group station consisted of two different activites where students learned about molecular interactions. The students were really excited to be around real scientists!<\/p>\n
