Olympic Plasmonics

Plasmonics largely consists of the use of subwavelength metal structures to manipulate light on the subwavelength scale. We have constructed a micro version of the Olympic rings and have simulated the response of this structure to a broadband pulse of infrared light. Five gold rings of 5 micron diameter were assembled in an Olympic configuration. Then, a broad-banded infrared pulse impinges on the rings and the movie shows the electromagnetic intensity (at any wavelength) as a function of time – long after the incident pulse is gone.

The results were also examined about a narrow band at specific wavelengths.
