  • Dr. Ottesen was selected for the 2017 Honors Faculty Service Award, which recognizes excellence in enhancing the quality of education for honors students in Arts & Sciences at OSU.
  • Congratulations to Dr. Ruixuan Ryan Yu for defending his thesis, “Hybrid-Phase Native Chemical Ligation Approaches to Overcome the Limitations of Protein Total Synthesis” on July 6, 2016.
  • Congrats to Mitch Weeman, who earned his BS in Biology in SP2016.  Good luck in med school!
  • Our recent OBC article has been selected as a “2016 Hot Article” by the journal, and Ryan’s artistic rendering of nucleosome synthesis made the cover.  Congrats again!
  • CJ Howard was awarded an Alumni Grant for Graduate Research and Scholarship by the OSU Alumni Association.  Congratulations, CJ!
  • CJ Howard was awarded a Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry Burrell Travel Award to attend the Gordon Research Conference in Biorganic Chemistry in June, 2015.
  • Angela Harrison was awarded the 2015 Irene Rosenfeld Scientific Achievement Award by the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry.  Congratulations, Angela!
  • Bryan Lent was awarded a second year of fellowship in the Chemistry-Biology Interface Program.  Congratulations, Bryan!

  • John Shimko was a 2nd Place Winner in the Young Investigator Research Competititon at the 22nd American Peptide Society Symposium in San Diego.
  • John Shimko was awarded an APS Travel Grant and a Department of Biochemistry Burrell Travel Award to attend the 22nd American Peptide Society Symposium in San Diego, June 2011.
  • Christina Knight won a Department of Biochemistry SURP award to support her research in summer 2011.
  • Mridula Manohar defended her thesis titled “Chemically Modified Histone H3 to Study Acetylation at the Nucleosome Dyad” and was awarded her M.S. degree in 2009. Mridula is now a researcher at Proctor & Gamble.
  • Michelle Ferdinand defended her Honors Research Thesis in May 2009.
  • Jennifer Ottesen was awarded an NSF CAREER award for Chemical Tools to Probe Histone Modifications in the Nucleosome Core.
  • Michelle Ferdinand won 2nd place in the Biological Sciences at the Denman Undergraduate Research Forum in 2009. Michelle also won an Outstanding Poster Award in the 2009 Biological Mathematical Physical Sciences Undergraduate Research Forum.
  • Christopher Smith won a Department of Biochemistry SURP award to support his research in summer 2009.
  • John Shimko won 2nd Place in the Hayes Graduate Research Forum Poster Competition.
  • Jennifer Ottesen and Michael Poirier were awarded an NIH R01 grant to study histone H3 modifications in the DNA-histone interface of the nucleosome.
  • Jennifer Ottesen was awarded an American Cancer Society Seed Grant through the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center IRG to study histone phosphorylation in chromatin remodeling.
  • Jennifer Ottesen was awarded the 2008 Dean’s Award for Undergraduate Research Mentoring
  • Michelle Ferdinand and Jon Picking each won a Department of Biochemistry SURP award to support her research in summer 2008.
  • Mridula Manohar placed 4th in Biological Sciences at the 2008 Denman Research Forum
  • John Shimko was awarded the 2007 Dean’s Award for Excellence as a Graduate Teaching Assistant for his work in Biochemistry 613, 614, and 521.

  • Welcome to Aaron, Rosalyn, and Allison, our new undergraduate research team members! Let’s make this an educational and productive semester – but most of all, fun with protein chemistry.
  • We’ve been poor at passing along news this semester, but belatedly – congrats Xiaoyu and Ziyong for proceeding to Candidacy! It’s a long journey to your thesis, but this is an important milestone.  Keep up the excellent work.
  • Ziyong presented his research developing improved methods for convergent solid phase ligation of large proteins at the CBC/Dow Chemical graduate poster forum.
  • CJ gave an excellent poster presentation at the 2017 IGP Symposium on May 23.

  • Our article “Preparation of Fully Synthetic Histone H3 Reveals that Acetyl-Lysine 56 Facilitates Protein Binding Within Nucleosomes” in collaboration with the Poirier laboratory was published in JMB.
  • Christina Knight joined our laboratory for H201 in Spring 2011, and will continue as a SURP awardee in summer 2011.
  • Dr. Ottesen presented a seminar in the “Peptides and Peptidomimetics” session of  the Pacifichem 2010 meeting in Honolulu, HI, December 2010.
